Twitter faced rent-related lawsuits from the Crown Estate in the UK

In connection with the outstanding rent Twitter allegedly owes on its London office, the court case has been referred to the social media company, the Crown Estate told FOX Business on Tuesday. It had previously contacted Twitter.

According to Crown Estate, they are currently in talks.

The Crown Estate is an “independent trading company established by an Act of Parliament with a diverse portfolio of UK buildings, coastline, seabed, forestry, farming and common land,” according to the UK Government. One of the assets in his portfolio is the Windsor Estate.

On its website, the Crown Estate says it has generated over £3 billion “for public spending” over a period of around 10 years.

Twitter has not responded to a request for comment as of press time.

In addition to the court cases in the UK, this month Twitter also launched legal action in the US over the rent. SRI Nine Market Square LLC recently filed a lawsuit alleging that Twitter is behind on a few million dollars in rent for the social media platform’s San Francisco headquarters, according to the Wall Street Journal.

At the end of October, the social media company was acquired by Tesla CEO Elon Musk. His acquisition comes more than six months after he first announced plans to buy Twitter, and after a protracted legal battle in which a Delaware court gave him and the company a deadline to complete the deal.

Twitter under Musk has taken steps to contain the costs. Many Twitter employees were fired during a major round of layoffs shortly after the takeover. There have also been reports that the company is reducing its physical footprint by closing office spaces in Seattle and New York City.

Musk has made changes to the Twitter website, including introducing a purchasable verification badge and ending enforcement under its COVID-19 misleading misinformation policy. Other things he wants to do are significantly increase the character limit per tweet and offer a “higher priced subscription that doesn’t allow ads,” he has stated.
