So Apple’s HomePod 2 still has the original’s worst design flaw

Apple’s surprise announcement of a brand new HomePod last month was met with a few raised eyebrows. The 2021 discontinued product returned in pretty much the same form, with an identical design and not much else apart from a few audio and DIY touches and a lower price. And it turns out that even the original’s biggest design flaw has returned.

YouTuber Marques Brownlee has confirmed in his video review that the HomePod 2 still has the potential to stain wooden surfaces and leave an unsightly ring. The problem, while less pronounced, is still there — but while Apple confirmed it last time, the company has yet to mention it this time. (In the new gear market? Check out the best Apple deals.)

In a support document (opens in new tab) For the original HomePod, Apple described the problem. “It’s not uncommon for a speaker with a vibration-damping silicone base to leave slight marks when placed on some wooden surfaces,” it said. “The stains can be caused by oils diffusing between the silicone base and the table top and often disappear after several days when the speaker is removed from the wooden surface. If not, gently wipe the surface with a soft, damp or dry cloth can remove the stains. If stains persist, clean the surface using the cleaning method recommended by the furniture manufacturer. If you’re concerned about this, we recommend placing your HomePod on a different surface.”
