- A Proud Boys “Initiation Ceremony Manual” describes the far-right group’s guidelines on masturbation.
- “A proud boy may ejaculate alone no more than once every 30 days,” the instructions say.
- Prosecutors are attempting to use the handbook as evidence in a January 6 sedition trial.
A handbook for new recruits for the far-right organization Proud Boys describes the extremist group’s idiosyncratic stance on masturbation: While its all-male members are encouraged to drink alcohol and engage in street violence against anti-fascists – ostensibly in self-defense – they are said to do so a to follow strict No Wanks policy.
Federal prosecutors are trying to introduce the document as evidence in the ongoing riot conspiracy trial involving five Proud Boys, including former leader Enrique Tarrio, who is accused of taking part in the January 6 riot. All have pleaded not guilty. The manual was seized by federal authorities two years ago and was recently released, according to new court documents released as part of the trial in US District Court in Washington, DC.
“A proud boy must not ejaculate alone more than once every thirty days,” according to the group’s “Initiation Ceremony Manual,” the document said.
“This means he must abstain from pornography during this time and if he has to ejaculate, he must be within three feet of a woman with her consent. The woman must not be a prostitute.”
The Anti-Defamation League views the Proud Boys as a violent, far-right group whose members often engage in misogynistic, anti-Islamic, transphobic and anti-immigrant rhetoric.
The masturbation ban was imposed by Gavin McInnes, who founded the group in 2016 as a street gang defending “Western chauvinism.” As journalist Andy Campbell details in his book We Are Proud Boys, members of the group are expected to follow the policy if they wish to advance to the second of the four membership tiers.
McInnes severed ties with the group in 2018 after several members were arrested for attacking anti-fascists outside of a lecture he gave in Manhattan honoring a far-right Japanese assassin.
Realizing the handbook and its guidelines are odd at best, a defense attorney for Dominic Pezzola – one of the Proud Boys accused of sedition over his role in trying to overturn the 2020 election – is trying to get prosecutors on it prevent mentioning it during the process. Indeed, among other things, the defense attorney highlighted the policy on masturbation and suggested that it could affect the jury.
“The document is riddled with politically incorrect remarks and allegations that would cause most or many Americans to recoil in anger, hatred and disgust,” said the defense motion, which was filed in federal court on Monday.
