Any hint of a new logo sends Marvel fans into a frenzy of anticipation and speculation. But the recent unveiling of a logo for upcoming show Agatha: Coven of Chaos has drawn more murmurs than most because the graphic appears to be an exact replica of the logo belonging to a recent HBO smash hit — Mare of Easttown . And even stranger, the Marvel show’s title seems to have changed.
The logo, shared by Agatha star Joe Locke on his Instagram Stories (now deleted), is exactly the same in almost every element, from the italic font to the way the title is laid out. See below. We’re not sure this one has what it takes to make our list of the best Marvel logos.
The logo is titled “Agnes of Westview” and was posted by Locke along with the caption “Ahhh what’s happening” – a statement that perfectly sums up the feelings of fans online. While the resemblance might be unintentional (designers know all too well the dangers of unconsciously mimicking a logo you’ve seen many times), fans are convinced there’s a hidden meaning to be interpreted here – after all, they’re nearly identical in title format , layout and typography.
Some fan theories dismiss the Mare reference altogether, ranging from a different name change for the series (Agatha: Coven of Chaos began as Agatha: House of Harkness) to the simple premise that the series was set in Westview (an MCU town ) will play. Others are mulling over the deleted aspect of the Instagram story, claiming that the photo revealed too much — but if the post was a story it would have been automatically deleted anyway, so we’re not sure that’s a big mystery .
We’ve rounded up some of the most perplexed responses below:
I think the reason he deleted the story is because Westview’s Agnes is probably an episode title and a dead sign of who he’s playing https://t.co/4i8ZVCmd0bJanuary 20, 2023
They shouldn’t have changed the title to Westview’s Agnes 🤮Coven of Chaos is MUCH BETTER pic.twitter.com/YP1rctGEoLJanuary 19, 2023
This is not a reference to Mare of Easttown. Agnes of Westview is just a title given to Agatha by the residents after they began to worship her as their heroine and savior. She sheds the name Agnes throughout the series once she is no longer narrow-minded about power. https://t.co/5cVEPKgh6lJanuary 19, 2023
Neither of these theories appeal to the elephant in the room – the fact that the design is a copy of Mare of Easttown. Other ideas circulating online envision the episode reflecting elements of Mare of Easttown in its plot, with a mystery to solve where Agnes (Agatha’s fake identity) plays detective, or maybe it just reflects the darkness, which is found in a fictional town in the MCU as well as in Easttown. But others think it’s all just diversionary tactics.
All in all, we think the logo could be more of an episode name than a series name change — or an on-set joke. We can’t imagine the logo would get the mark if it was more.
Either way, it was a brilliant way to get fans talking, in a very different way from the new Ant-Man 3 posters, which had tongues wagging at their hilarious Photoshop blunders.
