Julian Sands’ family has released a statement almost a week after the British actor was identified as one of the two hikers who recently went missing in the San Gabriel Mountains.
On Monday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department provided an update on the search for Sands, 65, known for films such as “A Room With a View” and “Warlock.”
on Twitterthe sheriff’s department wrote that the search is now on day 11 and shared a statement from the actor’s family.
“Our heartfelt thanks go to the compassionate members of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department who are coordinating the search for our beloved Julian, not least to the heroic search teams listed below who braved the conditions on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home bring,” said the statement, which named multiple search and rescue teams. “We are deeply touched by the outpouring of love and support.”
On January 13, a hiker was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area of Mt. Baldy, prompting a search and rescue effort by the sheriff’s department. Days later, the walker was identified as Sands.
In a news release issued Monday, the sheriff’s department said the search for Sands continued over the weekend by helicopters and drones using “infrared devices.” However, “all were negative for signs of Sands.”
A spokesman told the Times on Monday that some ground crews – after being pulled off the mountain last week due to avalanche danger and dangerous trail conditions – have been conducting a second search in previously searched areas. However, these teams have limited access to the summit due to the weather.
The press release also said Monday’s search efforts will not include helicopters due to “a strong wind warning is currently in place.”
The family’s statement comes after several of Sands’ Hollywood colleagues expressed their support for the actor, a keen mountaineer who has spoken out about his love of hiking.
“Since Friday I have known that my friend Julian Sands is missing on mt Baldy”, tweeted Cassian Elwes, film producer and brother of actor Cary Elwes. “I am devastated. A very close family friend who was an adventurer in everything he did. I said many prayers.”
Sands is also known for the films “Gothic”, “Siesta” and “Vibes”. His television credits include 24, The Blacklist, Banshee, Jackie Chan Adventures and Gotham.
