FLASHBACK: Pence went after Trump for classified documents before finding stash in his own home

Former Vice President Mike Pence once slammed former President Trump for mishandling classified documents in November, only for Pence to discover classified documents in his own home this week.

Pence made the comments during a November appearance on Meet the Press, with presenter Chuck Todd quizzing him on a range of topics. Pence called Trump’s handling of classified documents “incorrect” at the time.

“I have not hesitated to criticize the President when I think he was wrong. And it’s clearly not appropriate to have classified documents in an unprotected area,” Pence said, further criticizing how Biden’s Justice Department has handled the issue.

“I was on the House Judiciary Committee for ten years. Me, I know how the Justice Department works and there had to be many other ways to solve these problems,” he added.

The moment has returned to the limelight after a Tuesday Fox News report detailing that Pence’s own lawyers uncovered about a dozen classified documents at his Indiana home. Pence told Congress this week that the documents were found Jan. 16 at his home in Carmel, Indiana.

Pence officials said they immediately placed the documents in a safe and notified the Justice Department, and the FBI seized the documents on Jan. 19.

Pence’s team said that although the documents bear classified markings, the Department of Justice or the agency issuing the documents must make a final decision on whether or not the documents are classified.

Pence joins Trump and President Biden in his mishandling of classified documents, with Trump keeping documents at his home in Mar-a-Lago and Biden keeping some at his home in Wilmington, Delaware.
