The couple, who share 6-year-old Luna and 4-year-old Miles, initially announced in October 2020 that they had lost their baby at 20 weeks due to pregnancy complications.
Two years later, Chrissy revealed that she did in fact have a medical abortion — which uses drugs to induce labor in pregnancies with birth defects or complications — and not a miscarriage as she had long thought.
Discussing the heartbreaking experience at Propper Daley’s Day of Unreasonable Conversation program last September, Chrissy shared: “About halfway through, it became very clear [the baby] would not survive, and neither would I without medical intervention.”
“Let’s just call it what it was: It was an abortion. An abortion to save my life for a baby who had absolutely no chance. And to be honest, I never put that together until a few months ago,” she said, adding that she was really “frustrated” with herself for not getting it sooner.
Responding to the news on Twitter, several fans praised Chrissy for her candid disclosure while defending her against trolls who scrutinized her and accused her of lying about the whole thing.
“Chrissy it is incredibly generous of you to share this with us… I assure you that sharing your story is important and important,” one person wrote.
“Thank you again for your courage to speak out,” said another.
Almost two years after losing her baby, Chrissy announced she was pregnant again last August. And earlier this month, she and John welcomed their third child: a baby girl named Esti Maxine Stephens.
“She’s here! Esti Maxine Stephens – the house is busy and our family couldn’t be happier,” Chrissy wrote on Instagram last week, before revealing that she had a cesarean delivery.
“Daddy sheds tears of joy every night seeing Luna and Miles so loving and I’m learning you still need diapers with a cesarean!? We are in bliss. Thanks for all the love and well wishes — we feel it all!” she wrote.
Days later, Chrissy shared another candid update on her postpartum recovery.
Sharing a full body photo of herself posing in a silk dress and cozy cardigan, Chrissy wrote, “Oh I’m bandaging my wound and the 3.8 second clips of Beyonce performing in Dubai until I do a full HBO.” -Special.”
And Chrissy’s picture immediately caught on with fans when several people noticed the multiple breast milk stains on her outfit.
“The question is whether there are leaks at the top and bottom,” reads a comment on popular parenting blog Frida Mom.
“Looks like your milk is leaking,” one person wrote. “I thought my phone had water spots,” said another.
However, countless fans immediately hailed Chrissy for her authentic contribution, praising her for “normalizing leaking through everything.”
“The milk stains add an extra layer of authenticity to the whole thing,” one person commented. “It’s the authenticity for me,” echoed another.
“I love that you normalize everything that is leaking out in the first few weeks after giving birth. You wake up in the night and think, “Is that pee? is it milk Or is it sweat?” So many bodily fluid options,” said a third.
“Nothing says postpartum authenticity like milk spots!” another user added.
“The authenticity of this photo is top notch!!!” one wrote. “I love the postpartum reality!” said another.
And fans finally thanked Chrissy for being “so real” as they expressed their delight at the freedom women have these days to be more authentic.
“I’m so glad women now have the freedom to acknowledge this… and not hide,” one person wrote.
“Thank you for being so real. Dripping boobs and such. You are loved Chrissy!” said another.
