Brandon Cronenberg’s INFINITY POOL is an insanely twisted film that aims to shock audiences – GeekTyrant

I have a chance to catch Brandon Kronenbergupcoming movie, infinity pool, this week at Sundance, and holy shit! Making horror movies with insane bodies just has to be embedded in the Cronenberg family’s DNA. I liked the last Brandon Cronenberg movie, Owner, but this next wacky and wacky movie of his, sadly, wasn’t that good.

The film certainly takes the audience on a crazy ride, but it was just too much for me. Well, I love Cronenberg movies, but this one just didn’t click and I feel like it sacrificed the story for over-the-top elements and graphics to shock audiences. I was looking forward to this film, but it just didn’t suit me.

Well I’m not saying you won’t like it! If you’re a fan of body horror style Cronenberg movies then you’re obviously going to want to jump in and see what this is all about! You might enjoy it more than me. However, there are aspects of the film that I really appreciated, such as the concept for the story, which was very interesting, and the over-the-top performances were entertaining.

The film’s story follows James and Em Foster as they embark on an all-inclusive beach vacation in the fictional state of Li Tolqa to solve his writer’s block. “They spend their lazy days in their expensive resort, isolated from the surrounding countryside. Gabby introduces herself and her partner Al as she is a fan of James’ latest novel and they would like to spend some time with the Fosters. The couples plan a secret off-site day trip that ends in a fatal accident, blamed on James. For a hefty price, there are loopholes to support foreign travelers convicted of crimes, and this is how James is introduced to a perverted subculture of hedonistic tourism for the first time.”

The loophole is that for a price you can make an exact copy of yourself and be killed by the relative of the person you wronged or hurt. After this initial build up, the story erupts into insane twists and psychedelic madness. This is also where the warnings for the film come in, and that warning reads, “This film contains graphic violence and gore, graphic sexual content, and other themes that some viewers may find objectionable.”

Yes, it will definitely be offensive to some people, and there’s a lot of stuff in it that’s considered distasteful. Personally I wasn’t offended by that, I just don’t think all that crazy stuff helped the story. In fact, I thought it would be more distracting than anything else. But Cronenberg wanted to push some boundaries and shock people with this one. I heard one person talk about how they felt they had to shower after watching because the film was so “dirty”. It really gets under your skin.

The film is described as “a sci-fi trip through the evil exploits of foreigners abroad”. Crushing violence and surreal horrors permeate this dark satire of the privileged few, centered on the depraved leads of Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth.”

Alexander skarsgard and Mia Goth Certainly unforgettable performances, and there are images from this film that I won’t be able to shake my head in a hurry. This film is not for the faint hearted and I’m excited to see how fans of Cronenberg et al Owner will react to it. Just prepare yourself for some evil madness.

Reactions to this film have been divided. Most of the conversations I’ve had about it have been with people who either love it or hate it. I’m pretty divided on that. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t like it either. I don’t know, that was weird and I’ll probably never watch it again. All I can say is it was an experience.
