Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Had “Zero Romantic Connection” on That 70s Show

They may be happily married today, but it’s no secret that the romance between Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis was many years in the works.

The couple met in 1998 when they were cast in love interests Jackie Burkhart and Michael Kelso That 70’s show.

Though their on-screen love story was a central aspect of the storyline, Ashton and Mila’s romance didn’t mirror that of their characters, and the two kept things strictly platonic — thanks in part to their age difference.

When the pilot aired, Mila was only 14 and Ashton was already 20. However, the huge age difference was not intentional as Mila confessed that she actually lied about her age in order to get the part.

However, apart from the age difference, the possibility of a romantic relationship between the two completely disappeared when the show came to an end and both actors were in long-term relationships. Mila dated Macaulay Culkin for almost a decade while Ashton was married to Demi Moore.

However, neither relationship lasted, and the former co-stars finally got back together in 2012 before actually wedding in 2015.

It goes without saying that Ashton and Mila’s offscreen love story was a big deal for longtime fans That 70’s show — as well as their long-awaited return to the screen in the very place they met.

In case you missed it, Ashton and Mila made a comeback in Wisconsin earlier this month, reprising their roles as Jackie and Kelso on Netflix That ’90s showfollowing the next generation of teenagers hanging out in Point Place two decades later.

Along with OG cast members Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, and Wilmer Valderrama, Ashton and Mila made a cameo together in the first episode, with Kelso and Jackie fittingly returning as a twice-remarried couple with a son named Jay.

Though brief, the cameo sent fans into an absolute frenzy, and it sounds like Ashton and Mila enjoyed it just as much.

Appears on The One Show in the UK with Reese Witherspoon to promote her new Netflix film, your place or mineAshton was asked what it was like acting alongside his now-wife, which resulted in an adorable response.

“Every day that I can go to work with my wife is the best day of the year,” he said.

Ultimately, Ashton said the most important thing about the return was the reality of how much his life – namely his relationship with Mila – has changed in the 17 years since they last shared the screen as Jackie and Kelso.

“I think what’s crazy about this experience is that we’re in a completely different place in our relationship now than we were then,” he said, before reflecting on their uncomfortable age gap in the early days of their friendship.

“I mean when we were there she was 15 years old, I was 20 years old. There was no romantic connection between the two of us,” he said. “And then going back and having this new experience together was really wild and nostalgic.”

He added: “These characters that have been a part of our lives for so long. It was just super nostalgic for us and it was really fun.”

Of course, this isn’t the first time the couple has looked back fondly on their journey from co-stars to lovers, as Mila told Howard Stern in 2016 that the romantic spark between the two had been missing for some time.

“We played boyfriend and girlfriend for eight years. And for eight years — whether our couple was on or off — there was no romance between us as two people,” Mila said.

But as they say, the rest is history. And now it’s all the more exciting to see her back on screen — not just for us, but for the show’s bosses as well.

Speaking to BuzzFeed in celebration of the premiere of That ’90s showCo-creator Terry Turner said seeing Ashton and Mila back together in the role “was really the icing on the cake of this show.”

His colleague Bonnie Turner also spoke about how surreal it was to have the couple back on set, explaining one instance when Ashton woke up from a nap and felt like he had stepped back in time.

“He said, ‘When I woke up, Mila was standing over me and I opened my eyes. I looked around and I was in the Forman basement with my wife staring at the [lighting] Grid disguised as Jackie. It was the strangest feeling I’ve ever had. I literally didn’t know [what year] I was [in] for a minute,’” Bonnie recalled.

Will Jackie and Kelso be back for a second season? We have to wait.
