arsenal welcome Manchester United to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, knowing that a win could keep them in position to come back from eight points Manchester City in the second. The Gunners currently lead the Premier League by five points but Mikel Arteta’s men have a game on their hands against Pep Guardiola’s chasing group. Erik ten Hag’s Red Devils are three points down and could also be within five points of Arsenal despite the capital club’s extra game. Arteta’s side have suffered defeat just once in La Liga so far this season and that was against United in September.

In the last seven Premier League games in London, Arsenal have won five out of seven and lost just once. Last season was a 3-1 win but United were only able to complete the double over the Gunners for the second time since Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Arteta is yet to concede his men in 2023 after a goalless draw Newcastle United and conceding a goal against Oxford United and Tottenham Hotspur.

Bukayo Saka has scored in his last two games against United, surpassed only by Thierry Henry and Freddie Ljungberg, who have scored in three consecutive encounters. The in-form Marcus Rashford has four goals and four assists from 10 Premier League starts against Arsenal, while Gabriel Martinelli has six goals and four assists in his last 10 appearances at the Emirates Stadium.

Team News

Arsenal: Gabriel Jesus is out with the table leader in the long term due to a knee injury Eddie Nketiah should be back. Mohamed Elneny and Tear Nelson are the only other major concerns for Arteta, while Saka and Wilhelm Saliba avoided bookings against Spurs so is not banned from them. If Leandro Trossard’s move from Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday isn’t completed in time for him to be registered, the Belgium international is unlikely to make his debut here.

United: Casemiro is suspended so Ten Hag has to take care of it. Fred and Scott McTominay arrived away from the bank crystal palace while Wout Weghorst also made his Selhurst Park debut. Anthony Martial was injured, as is Diogo Dalot and Donny van de Beek is absent for a long time. Jack Butland is eligible after missing the Palace trip but has yet to make the substitutes and Fred is no longer walking a tightrope. Jadon Sancho was back in training on Thursday but is unlikely to be ready for that.

Neither side can afford to lose and both sides have five wins and one draw from the last six. Despite the Gunners’ home advantage over the Red Devils, it seems these two will ultimately cancel each other out and give City a chance to close the gap at the top for the time being. Choose: Arsenal 1 United 1
